Crook County Oregon is located in the geographic center of the state and covers 29792 miles of high desert forest and range land. The county has a rapidly growing population and traditional ranching practices are under pressure from this development and from the growing threat of invasive species of weeds. Our urban interface [the zone where structures and other human developments meet, or intermingle with, undeveloped wild lands] is also being impacted by the increased fire risk these species pose.
Building on the counties established weed assessment and mitigation programs and the expertise of WWETAC and County GIS personnel a joint Invasive Weeds Project was established in early 2006. The goals of the project are:
- Integrate all available noxious weed data for the county from local, state and federal sources
- Identify the potentially controllable species (those that haven't already overrun the county i.e. Cheat Grass (Bromus tectorum)
- Produce base maps of weed locations - distribute to stakeholders
- Analyze the assembled data to produce habitat, spread and risk models
